Turkey – CMB Short Selling Prohibition

On 23 March 2025, TUR CMB issued new bulletin on decisions by the board.

  • Due to developments in Borsa Istanbul AS (TUR EXC) markets recently, it has become necessary for TUR CMB to take certain measures to ensure the capital market operates in a reliable, a transparent, an effective, a stable, a fair and competitive environment.
  • Announcement is made under Board Decision dated 23 March 2025, numbered 18/574.

Release and Bulletin

  • For this reason, from 24 March 2025 until the end of the session on 25 April 2025, all of the short selling transactions in Borsa Istanbul AS equity markets are now prohibited.
  • In accordance with Board Decision 16/531 of 19 March 2025, no orders can be given and no transactions can be carried out within scope of the buyback program during the opening session and last 15 minutes of the first session, or during the second session.
  • These rules relate to the definitions within Communique on Buyback Shares, II-22.1.
  • Provision on equity protection ratio of at least 35% for the duration of capital market instrument transactions on credit, as per Article 17 of Communique V65, can be now flexibly applied so equity ratio will be at least 20% for the duration of the transactions.
